The first thing to do when you experience problems is probably
the simplest -- talk to your coach! You may be able to change workouts, revisit stroke mechanics, or try alternative training. One
thing is for sure -- your coach should not be the last person to find out you have a problem!
You may be able to adjust your swims
to painfree or less painful levels and then "rebuild" to desired levels gradually. That's a key element in what we do when swimmers
get to the point of needing therapy.
Our experience suggests that total rest from swimming will feel good for now, but your problem may still be there when you return, even after up to six months of off-season rest. Now that's frustrating!! We advise swimmers to always deal with recovery from an injury actively -- there is no other way to "fix" the problems which caused the injury in the first place.
Don't mess around too long -- if you're not
making steady progress with self-management, it's time to go to the next level. Contact your Athletic Trainer, Team Physician or personal
Physician for help. The longer you wait, the longer it will take to get better.
When you go, take some time to prepare so you can get right to the point. We've developed a swimming injury history form which helps. Fill it out & take it with you.
